Kings usurp Monarchs!

I may be corrected by Mr Dave Wackrill here, but I believe this is the first time in history that the Kings have beaten the Monarchs in any season!

The Monarchs fielded one of their strongest teams of the year, with Ian Johnston joining the regular duo of Martin Hall and Tomak.

For the Kings, it was the standard Nick, Guy and Jordan.

The match started with a 4th meeting in a week for Nick and Ian - Having played in 2 singles matches and a doubles over the weekend at the Northampton Open Tournament, Ian was flying high having pinched 2 of them deuce in the 5th, and a straight forward 3-0 win in the other.

The tables were very much turned today however, and Nick blew away the hard bat hero in 3 very straight forward sets - This wasn’t going to be Ian’s night……..

Jordan faced off against Martin next, and despite taking a 2-0 lead, Martin was pegged back by the much improved Miss Wood - The final set was nip and tuck, before Martin just about pulled through 11-9 in the 5th.
This week, the Far East has been celebrating the Chinese New Year (year of the dog) - However, you can be forgiven in thinking that this year is actually the year of the Sparrow! Off the back of 2 player of the weeks, Guy Sparrow has been irresistible!

Despite an impressive display from Tomak, Guy had too much throughout, and rallied to a vital 11-7 in the 5th win.

The doubles was less exciting - The Kings duo of Howard and Sparrow threw away a big lead in the first, and Martin/Ian didn’t look back from there taking it 3-0.

Ian stayed on to face Jordan, and you couldn’t have ever imagined 5 more uneven sets in your life! 4-11, 11-4, 11-5, 4-11 and Jordan finally brought it home 11-5 for the biggest win of her year!

Nick and Tomak fought out the next match, and it was a 4th 5 setter in only the 6th match!
In the end, Tomak was too consistent, and deserved the win 7-11 in the 5th.

Not to be outdone, Guy and Martin also decided to go to 5 - Although Sparrow was doing his best Muhammed Ali impression. Luring the great Foreman into the match, before running away with the 5th whilst Martin was still catching his breath - A season of close calls for Mr Hall.

Jordan and Tomak played out a straightforward 3 set win for the latter, which brought the match score to 4-4.

Sparrow showed why millions of people have been celebrating him this week, with another impressive display of hitting, to walk through the out of sorts Ian Johnston in 3 sets. Player of the week 3 weeks in a row?? I’d love to hear a better option!

The final showdown was between the 2 captains. Nick vs Martin.

Martin “CHO’d” his way into a 1 set lead, before Nick pegged him back with comfortable wins in sets 2 and 3.

The 4th set was oh so close, and despite more “CHO’ing” and “Boom’ing”, Martin couldn’t stop history from writing a new chapter in the Greenleys saga, as Nick went on to claim the 4th set 16-14 and a historic 6-4 win!
